Help with Teaching?

Hi everyone. I've just recently been given the task of teaching chess to a five-year old. She starting to get how the pieces move (lots of trouble with the Knight, though), but I'm at a loss for how to proceed. Does anybody out there have any experience with teaching this age group? I don't! :) She'...

And my list of chess friends decreases by one. I guess I'll never get that rematch he promised...

May his family be comforted and his games be remembered. He was a fine player and a good friend.

If you were using the navigational buttons to look at some of the past moves, and if you pressed the 'Move' button while still looking at one of these past positions, that message will pop up. No, it doesn't screw the game up and permanently change the game board (unless you made a really bad move :...

Not another discussion on the rating system! This topic seems to get raised every two-three months, and always with a debate! Well, right about now, the Zapper usually comes out to remind us that chess is FUN, whearas arguing over a stupid number is decidedly NOT FUN. Oh, there is an easy, but drast...

Canadian Chess

Hi Graham, The current Canadian Team is the Canadian Gambits. If you have registered at the Chess-Teams web-site, you may be asked to join the Team when a current player leaves the team. I'm the former Captain of the Canadian Gambits, and I know from personal experience that there is a surprising ra...

I'll be the first to wish everyone good luck and excellent chessing in their games! This should be a blast.

Bret, do you need the match ID numbers? Here's the one for Group Three:

Contact a Player

After you have sent a player a message, one must use the Back buttons to navigate back to Net-Chess home. I would like a link there that takes you back directly.

The game will stay in your 'All My Games' list for 24 hours. Don't worry, the loss is already official, and you don't have to do anything. Before the 'Most Recent Completed Games' list, there was no way to know if an opponent resigned or not because the game just disappeared! So, Greg put in the fea...

Agreed! I was going to post something along this line, but you beat me to it! I'll just have to beat you at the board then! Holiday wishes and season's greetings and all that to everyone. My Christmas break starts now, so don't expect many moves between now and next year! Take care, -- Jonathan

Help with King's Gambit

Can somebody help me with this line of the King's Gambit: 1.e5 e5; 2.f4 d6?! I know it's dubious and I usually get a fine game, but I feel like I'm missing something, and my small, old, out-dated text doesn't touch it. After Nf3, I've seen Bg4 (then ... f5 in one game!), g6, Nc6, Nd7 -- well, just a...

Bottom line: when I buy anything over the Internet, I do not expect a tax break. Because the word happens to be 'DONATION' and not 'PURCHASE' should not make a big deal. Mathematically, 30 dollars a year (the highest suggested donation) is less than a dime a day, less than your daily Tim Hortons or ...

Don't plan on it being anytime within the next month though.
Greg can either spend hours scanning the program code for the tiniest of errors, or he can go on Christmas vacation. What a hard choice!

I'm such an idiot when it comes to this technology stuff. So, yeah, I'm using IE, but sounds like I shouldn't be!

What exactly I'm missing/not getting with Explorer that these other ones offer (besides, as Cornstalk notes, a chance to hit back at the Microsoft monopoly)?

Yes, I've noticed that too! When a game first starts and my opponent sends his salutations, it says they came from me! Almost had an identity crisis.

It's only an issue with the new 'enhanced' board display. The old or 'standard' model works fine.

Hi, everyone

Wow. It's hard to believe that it's been a year since I was last playing chess... crazy. In any event, I'm back, and hoping for some great chess. Since my old handle (dragonpower) has an unsettling amount of time outs, I've opted to 'retire' it and go for the simple jpettit. On a personal note, I wo...
