Idea for a tourney

Post by hamot » Mon Aug 30, 2004 3:39 pm

Greetings everyone -

I am considering hosting a double elimination "bracket" tourney here. Each round would consist of 2 players and 3 games (best of 3). If the score is tied, the player who scores the first win moves on. If all 3 games end up in draws, then another game would have to be played. Games would be 30d + 0d to make sure that things keep moving.

I would probably want to have 2 divisions - 1899 and under, and 1900 and over. Any takers? Please reply to this post if interested.

The time that I list here makes the game a maximum of 2 months. I imagine that a 14d + 1d time limit would help, or even a 7d + 1d time limit. I just don't want the tourney to last more than 9 - 12 months. If we have a lot of takers, then it could last quite a while. If we only have 8 or 16 takers, then time should not be an issue.

I am flexible on the time to a point.....I just don't want things to drag on for 1-2 years. Thanks for your input.

You can count me in to

Regarding the time issue it would be better to have some time added after each move as some of us may well take holidays during the time the tournament is running and could there fore lose half the time assuming a 30d+0d setting with a two week holiday

What would you think about 14d + 1d or 7d + 1d? Anyone?

Hard to say until you know exactly how many games we will be playing really as the more games you play te longer you'd need per game added on

7days plus 1 or 2 days would be about right in my opinion

enjoyed chess for thirty years...have lots of books and mags but never time to study. Maybe when I retire...chess strength has gone done ratings are unrealistic

I'm gonna go with 14d + 1d. If those time controls don't work for you, please don't join. Not trying to be crass here, just want to get things rolling.

First bracket posted

Post by hamot » Wed Oct 27, 2004 9:04 am

Ok...I have the brackets listed. You can find them here.

Rules are best of 3. Challenge for 3 games. Person listed first challenges person listed second. Time controls should be 14d + 1d. If you agree on different time controls, please make sure you keep things moving.

Also, please email me your match number using the net-chess email system.

Let's play chess!

Tim

P.S. Game 15 is only if the result of game 14 gives each player only one loss. Also, I typed game, but I mean match (best 2 of 3) Codes like L g 1 means loser of game 1. Any other questions just contact me.

Site admin vs. The Zapper (bracket 1) - sounds like a match made for pay-per-view! Can we even hope to expect a fair fight? Is Mills Lane available?

Oh, he can hope for a fair fight. Now might be the time to warn people about a potential bug that causes queens to randomly appear on the board.
