Help with King's Gambit

Post by jpettit » Wed Dec 01, 2004 3:20 pm

Can somebody help me with this line of the King's Gambit:

1.e5 e5; 2.f4 d6?!

I know it's dubious and I usually get a fine game, but I feel like I'm missing something, and my small, old, out-dated text doesn't touch it. After Nf3, I've seen Bg4 (then ... f5 in one game!), g6, Nc6, Nd7 -- well, just about everything! Is any of this considered by theory?

Thanks for your input, and long live the gambit!

Hello Petit,

I don't know if the theory is there, but below two games:

[Event "Schneider Bohemia Open"]
[Site "Pilsen CZE"]
[Date "2001.08.25"]
[EventDate "2001.08.18"]
[Round "8"]
[Result "0-1"]
[White "P Neumann"]
[Black "J Jirka"]
[ECO "C30"]
[WhiteElo "2438"]
[BlackElo "2292"]
[PlyCount "80"]

1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3. Nf3 d6 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Bc4 Nc6 6. d3 a6 7. Nd5 Nxd5 8.
Bxd5 Be6 9. Bxc6+ bxc6 10. f5 Bd7 11. Qe2 Qb8 12. c3 f6 13. g4 a5 14. b3
Qa7 15. a3 Rb8 16. Rb1 Bb6 17. h4 a4 18. b4 c5 19. c4 cxb4 20. axb4 Bc5 21.
Ba3 Be3 22. Kf1 g6 23. Re1 Bf4 24. Rg1 Kf7 25. Qf2 Qa8 26. Ke2 c5 27. b5

Rxg1 34. Rxg1 Rg8 35. Rxg8 Kxg8 36. Qa2 Qa5 37. Nd2 Be8 38. h6 Qc3 39. Qb3
Bh5+ 40. Ke3 Qd4+ 0-1

With this game, you can find back several optional continuation moves for white: 3.Nf3, 4.Nc3, 5.Bc4, 6.d3, 10.f5, 13.g4
It also shows what kind of endgame you might expect, playing the KGD.

If you want to research d6 as black, maybe you could have a look at the following game, though at a lower level.

2...d6

If I remember correctly 2...d6 was Fishers recommendation against the KG, so there should probably be some of his games to look at.

Actually Fischer's move was 3...d6 (not 2...d6) ;after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d6 so after 1.e4 e5 2. f4 d6 3.Nf3 exf4 transposes to Fischer variation. Also playable is 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Bc5 3.Nf3 d6 etc. My copy of ECO vol C (1997) only lists two games with 2...d6 in note 1. a 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.Bb5 Bd7 6.d3 exf4 7.Bf4 Be7 8. O-O O-O 9.d4 +/ (big edge for white) and b. 3.d3 Nc6 4.Nf3 Bg4 5.h3 Bxf3 6.Qxf3 Be7 7.Nc3 Nf6 8.Be3 +/= (slight edge for White).

2...d6 is indeed a dubious move, which gives White everything he wants. The standard way to play against it is to withhold the development of the f1-bishop until Black's knight appears on c6, then pin it. White is then playing a very souped-up sort of Ruy Lopez. Thus for example, 3. Nf3 Nc6 4. Bb5 or 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 (not 4. Bc4, which is merely O.K.) 4...Nc6 4. Bb5. Black's outlook is bleak.

It would probably be even worse for Black to put his b7-knight on d7. In that case , White would deploy his bishop to c4.

These games address 2...Bc5, not 2...d6, which is the subject of this thread.

My theorybook says:
1.e4,e5
2.f4,d6
3.Nf3,Nd7
4.d4,Ngf6
5.fxe5,Nxe4
6.Bd3
With a better position for white..
