MY ONE WISH
MY ONE WISH
My one wish here on net-chess would be for improved chess board graphics. Maybe slightly larger and with better colours. I find this site strains my eyes more than other sites. No harm in having a dream.

Re: MY ONE WISH
Have you tried all combinations of board layouts and pieces and colors and other browsers?

Re: MY ONE WISH
Been working on this:
http://www.net-chess.com/newboard/test.html
It scales to the width of the screen, but not the height yet, so you might have to make the window smaller.

Re: MY ONE WISH
Playing Chess by burning-out your eyeballs looking at a computer screen is not the proper way.
Set up the position on a real chessboard, in order to study the position.
This allows for analysis and fewer mistakes.

Re: MY ONE WISH
The proposed new board looks great and is equal to anything out there.
I realise that the preferred option is to set up a real chess board. This also has the added advantage of helping when you play OTB games as 2d computer boards tend to destroy my sight of the board and I have to practice with a real board before a tournament.

I think this site have become outdathet. Its almost just the same it was 15 years ago.
Re: MY ONE WISH
The old skool feel of this site is part of its charm, but I agree that the board is small (3"x3") when I'm looking at it on my 23" monitor.
Re: MY ONE WISH
I really need that larger board now. I had my cataracts done 3 years ago and now my vision is starting to haze up, so it's off to the specialist for some laser treatments. I should imagine that my vision should improve dramatically, but for now I struggle with the small drab boardgmiller wrote:Been working on this:

Re: MY ONE WISH
I'm working on it. Moving into a new house and trying to move the whole site to a new server first to take care of the recent crash issues we've had. If it helps, most browsers have a zoom feature, usually accessed by holding the control key and using the mouse scroll wheel.

Re: MY ONE WISH
I've made some updates, so try them out. If everything goes well, I might be able to turn it on as 'experimental' within the next week or so.

Good grief~~le mieux est l'enemi du bon~~if it ain't broke don't fix it.
A tempest in a teapot.
I would suggest that internet chess sites are not responsible
for chessplayers' refusal to set up a real board with real pieces.
Use the zoom.

Re: MY ONE WISH
I couldn't imagine setting up a board for every move. But, for those that do, starting with a bigger board on the screen will help them too.

Re: MY ONE WISH
Just had my left eye laser treated and the result is amazing. The black pieces are no longer a hazy grey colour and the colours are much richer. Playing here is now be much more enjoyable. Really looking forward to the right eye being treated.
Re: MY ONE WISH
Congratulations on the laser treatment, ziggy.
What I have sometimes done for analysis is copy the move list into a program such as Scid vs. PC so I can move the pieces around. I of course do not use any of the engine features.

Made some updates:

A handful more TODO's and it should be ready.

Re: MY ONE WISH
It doesn't work for me (I only see the brown background without any pieces or board)
Please don't forget to make an option for using the old display.
Would be nice if this option could be a permanent flag, not like the current old display

Re: MY ONE WISH
I’ll have to check SCID out. ATM it’s beyond me.
On my iPad I often enlarge the board. The trouble can be when you touch a piece on the screen the board can unintentionally change size.
I look forward to the new version.

Hmm, which browser are you using? Works in Chrome, IE, Firefox, Edge. And, yes, you'll still have the option to use the old display.

Re: MY ONE WISH
I use Midori. Maybe the problem is the keyword let in javascript which causes the problem. So I would be glad if you could give the option still to use the old style. Or maybe a js version which uses var instead of let?
Many thanks

Re: MY ONE WISH
The old versions will still be available. Odds are, if it doesn't support const and let, there's a lot of other stuff it won't support.

Re: MY ONE WISH
If you want to try out the new board, go to your profile and change the "Interface Preference" to "Experimental". I've been using it for the past couple of weeks. Still a couple of rough spots to work out, mainly around the comments and the notepad. It will eventually become the default.

Re: MY ONE WISH
On the main page, click "My Profile", at the bottom click "Edit My Profile", it's the 3rd option from the bottom.

Re: MY ONE WISH
Yea, that's one issue I'm working on. It only shows up if your opponent has put in a comment.
